Regular Budget – 10-year perspective

The IARC Regular Budget has grown during the past decade thanks to the admission of new Participating States, with the number of countries contributing to the budget rising from 23 in 2014 to 27 in 2024*.

*China became an IARC Participating State in 2021 and contributes to the IARC Regular Budget from 2024 onward. Contributions in 2022–2023 were credited to the unbudgeted assessment account, and hence they are not shown in the figure above. Egypt and Saudi Arabia became IARC Participating States in 2024 and will contribute to the IARC Regular Budget from 2026 onward. Their contributions in 2024–2025 will be credited to the unbudgeted assessment account, and hence they are not shown in the figure above.


Allocation of Regular Budget for 2024–2025

The IARC Regular Budget for the 2024-2025 biennium is allocated to the following six priority strategic objectives.

  1. Describing the occurrence of cancer
  2. Understanding the causes of cancer
  3. Evaluating cancer prevention interventions
  4. Synthesizing and mobilizing knowledge and strengthening global capacities in cancer science
  5. Strengthening the Agency’s leadership, governance, strategic engagement, and advocacy
  6. Strengthening the efficiency and effectiveness of the Agency’s research and collaboration

2022–2023 Regular Budget and Expenditure

The activities during the previous biennium progressed well, and the figure below compares the budget and the expenditure in 2022-2023 for each strategic objective.
