Scientific Personnel
The scientific work of IARC is organized into four pillars, which reflect the Agency’s fundamental priorities and consist of eight research Branches, as well as research Teams. The research Branches focus on particular areas of cancer research, and the research Teams, which are composed of members across Branches, collaborate closely on projects of common interest. Scientific personnel include visiting scientists and postdoctoral researchers in addition to short- and long-term staff members. IARC takes very seriously its role in training the next generation of cancer researchers, and its worldwide perspective is reflected in the development of expertise in people who will return to work in low- and middle-income countries. Many students complete part or all of their studies for higher qualifications at IARC and make valuable contributions to the Agency’s research programmes before pursuing a cancer research career elsewhere.
IARC currently has more than 340 personnel members from almost 60 countries.
Support Personnel
The Services to Science and Research Branch supports and facilitates the Agency’s scientific activities and manages its budget. For the 2024–2025 biennium, the Governing Council granted the Agency a regular budget of 48.68 million euros. The support services include Administrative Services, Budget and Finance, Human Resources, Grants Office, Information Technology, and Publishing, Library, and Web Services, all of which play an essential role in IARC’s research. In addition, the clerical, technical, and laboratory expertise embedded within the research Branches provides further vital support to the Agency’s scientists.
Director
The Director of IARC is elected by, and reports to, the IARC Governing Council. The Director is responsible for the development and implementation of IARC’s scientific programme and oversees the day-to-day operation of the Agency. The present Director, Dr Elisabete Weiderpass, took office on 1 January 2019 and started a second five-year term on 1 January 2024.
