IARC convenes the EC-GaC Working Group to develop the first European guidelines for gastric cancer prevention within the EU-GAINS project

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) hosted a three-day meeting to launch the work of the European Commission Initiative on Gastric Cancer (EC-GaC) Working Group, part of the EU-GAINS project co-funded by the European Union (EU), on 19–21 January 2026. The EC-GaC Working Group is a multidisciplinary team composed of experts from various countries. Over the next 22 months and under the leadership and guidance of IARC and the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), the Working Group will meet on several occasions to develop the first-ever evidence-based guidelines for Helicobacter pylori screen-and-treat strategies for gastric cancer prevention in Europe.

The meeting opened with an overview of the European cancer policy landscape and current European Commission initiatives, followed by a presentation from the IARC coordination team on the objectives, structure, and expected outputs of the EC-GaC Working Group. Sessions also served to reinforce training on the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) methodology for translating scientific evidence into European guidelines and quality assurance schemes, while highlighting ongoing gastric cancer prevention efforts in Europe and Asia. These discussions underscored the need to align EC-GaC activities with major European initiatives such as the Towards Gastric Cancer Screening Implementation in the European Union (TOGAS) project and related research programmes on gastric cancer prevention and early detection.

The EC-GaC Working Group established the roadmap to advance the guideline development process and preparatory work for the quality assurance scheme. The constructive exchanges and strong engagement of all attendees underscored the commitment to building a cohesive and scientifically robust foundation for future recommendations aimed at improving gastric cancer prevention across Europe.
