The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) hosted the first expert workshop for the development of the third European Union (EU) report on the status of implementation of the Council Recommendations on cancer screening (Third EU Cancer Screening Report), on 4–5 February 2026 in Lyon, France. The meeting brought together specialists from IARC, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE), the Joint Research Centre (JRC), clinical networks, and national screening programme representatives from 33 countries across Europe, to strengthen the evidence base guiding cancer screening policies.
The workshop opened with an overview of the EU cancer screening policy context and reflections on the lessons learned from the Second EU Cancer Screening Report. Participants were introduced to the objectives, structure, and expected outputs of the upcoming report, including its integration with the European Cancer Information System (ECIS). The CanScreen-ECIS pilot project was also presented as a key component preparing countries for harmonized data reporting.
Experts presented recent findings from the survey of cancer screening programmes in EU Member States, covering breast, cervical, colorectal, lung, prostate, and gastric cancer. These exchanges highlighted progress made across countries, ongoing challenges in programme implementation, and the importance of developing consistent indicators to support reliable comparisons across the EU.
The workshop concluded with agreement on the refinement of indicators, the design of the data collection process, and the roadmap for future meetings. The collaborative spirit and constructive discussions throughout the two days underscored a shared commitment to producing a robust and harmonized Third EU Cancer Screening Report that will support strengthened early detection strategies across Europe.
