IARC hosts EC-CvC meeting on quality assurance and quality indicators for cervical cancer screening programmes

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) is hosting a meeting of the Expert Working Group of the European Commission Initiative on Cervical Cancer (EC-CvC) on 20–22 May 2025. The objective of the meeting is to perform an in-depth examination of the methodology for developing the European voluntary quality assurance scheme.

The EC-CvC Working Group is starting to review and approve the general and treatment requirements for the quality assurance scheme for cervical cancer prevention and care, as well as the quality indicators for screening. The development of quality indicators further elaborates the final data of the CanScreen-European Cancer Information System (ECIS) project, another joint IARC–European Commission project, which ended in February 2024.

At a previous EC-CvC meeting, which took place in February 2025, the Working Group drafted recommendations on the ages to start and stop screening for cervical cancer in the general population in Europe, and laid the groundwork for screening recommendations for populations that have been vaccinated against human papillomavirus (HPV), which is the primary cause of cervical cancer. The Working Group will meet again in November 2025 for discussions on the ages to start and stop screening and screening intervals for vaccinated populations.
