Researchers from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and partner institutions including Erasmus MC (the Netherlands), the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana (Slovenia), and the Ministry of Health of Slovenia have launched the Improving Cancer Screening in Slovenia (ICSIS) project to investigate and introduce new organized population-based cancer screening programmes for lung cancer and prostate cancer in the country.
IARC will support Slovenia in planning and implementing pilot screening programmes for lung cancer and prostate cancer and in upgrading cervical cancer screening through a shift to testing for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, based on the evaluation of local capacity, stakeholder engagement, health economic analyses, and targeted communication strategies. As a global leader in cancer prevention and early detection, IARC brings extensive expertise in this domain to the ICSIS project.
The launch of the ICSIS project took place on 3 March 2025, at the beginning of the 42nd annual Slovenian Week Against Cancer. This year, the theme for the week, “A New Breeze in the Fight Against Cancer – Exploring the Potential of Lung and Prostate Cancer Screening in Slovenia”, is based on the new project. ICSIS will support ongoing implementation research projects in Slovenia, such as LUKA (for lung cancer screening), PETER (for prostate cancer screening), and ZORA RENEWAL (for cervical cancer screening). The Ministry of Health and the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency (ARIS) fund LUKA, PETER, and ZORA RENEWAL, which are led by the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana. The European Union will fund the ICSIS project through the Technical Support Instrument.
