Publication of cancer screening data from 17 francophone African countries in the CanScreen5 data repository

The Cancer Screening in Five Continents (CanScreen5) initiative has now collected, reviewed, validated, and published national screening data from 17 francophone countries in Africa, with the support of an external panel of experts.

Information on policies, protocols, and organization of cancer screening programmes in these additional countries is also now available in the Country Fact Sheets section of the CanScreen5 website.

The data, from Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, the Comoros, the Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, the Niger, Senegal, and Togo, have been made available with the collaboration of 22 dedicated cancer screening managers and health professionals from these 17 countries.

This achievement reflects IARC’s commitment to advancing equitable, evidence-based cancer screening services in the region. It follows the successful completion of a CanScreen5 training course that culminated with an in-person workshop held in Rabat, Morocco, in 2024. This was an important event for participants and influenced the national screening programmes.

This progress could not have been achieved without the cooperation of the Ministry of Health of Morocco, the Lalla Salma Foundation for Cancer Prevention and Treatment (Morocco), and the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Africa, in Brazzaville, the Congo. The CanScreen5 initiative collaborators are very grateful for their support.
