The current and future cancer burden in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries

A new study led by scientists from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with researchers from cancer registries in the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates) presents national cancer incidence and mortality patterns in the six GCC countries using the GLOBOCAN estimates for 2020 alongside future cancer projections up until 2040. The article was published in the journal Cancer Medicine.

The study highlights the specific cancer incidence and mortality patterns in the region and predicts a significant increase in both incidence of and mortality from cancer in the GCC countries over the coming decades. This provides an evidence base for local policy-makers seeking to develop cancer control interventions in each country.
