Celebrating the work of front-line workers in the fight against cervical cancer: making a difference among women from all walks of life

Cervical cancer is a significant public health concern in India, although it is fully preventable through the vaccination of adolescent girls against human papillomavirus (HPV) and the early detection and treatment of precancerous lesions in adult women.

Front-line health workers are often the first point of contact for women, providing essential information and guidance.

On the outskirts of Pune, 150 km south of Mumbai, a local nongovernmental organization called Prayas has been working closely with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) to offer cervical cancer screening and treatment for early precancerous lesions to women with poor access to these services.
