The 11th instalment in the International Agency for Research on Cancer–European Society for Medical Oncology (IARC-ESMO) webinar series will be broadcast live on Wednesday 2 April 2025 at 15:00 CEST. The topic of the webinar will be Air Pollution and Cancer. The event, which will last approximately 1.5 hours, will include two presentations and a question and answer session. Dr Joachim Schüz, Head of the Environment and Lifestyle Epidemiology Branch at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), will chair the event.
In the first presentation, Professor Zorana Jovanovic Andersen, a Professor in Environmental Epidemiology at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, will give an overview of the evidence on air pollution and cancers other than lung cancer from two large European multicentre studies: the European Study of Cohorts for Air Pollution Effects (ESCAPE) and Effects of Low-Level Air Pollution: A Study in Europe (ELAPSE). She will summarize major findings from studies of breast, liver, stomach, kidney, and bladder cancers, leukaemia, multiple myeloma, and brain tumours. She will also reflect on the findings and significance of these two studies in the context of the overall evidence on air pollution and non-lung cancers.
In the second presentation, Dr Laura Mezquita, a Clinician and Scientist in Thoracic Oncology and Molecular Epidemiology at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona and the Fundació de Recerca Clínic Barcelona – Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS), Spain, will review the latest evidence on the impact of air pollution across different cancer subtypes, examining its impact on tumour profile and its clinical implications. She will provide an updated perspective on how air pollution could contribute to cancer heterogeneity and on precision medicine approaches to improve cancer care.
The IARC-ESMO webinar series aims to provide new perspectives or to present new research, to complement the large variety of educational resources that are freely accessible from the online learning platform of the IARC-ESMO Learning and Capacity-Building Initiative on Cancer Prevention. The webinar series is organized with the support of and in collaboration with the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO).
