A randomized controlled trial that is led by researchers from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has been chosen among a list of 11 clinical trials that will shape medicine in 2025. The top clinical trials were presented in an article published in Nature Medicine.
The selected IARC project is a trial of a web-based tool aimed at encouraging women, particularly those with lower education levels and from disadvantaged areas, to participate in screening programmes for cervical cancer using at-home self-sampling tests for human papillomavirus (HPV).
The tool takes the form of a multi-language decision aid and is accessible via an artificial intelligence-based chatbot, which is available through multiple smartphone channels. It was developed in coordination with women from the target populations and health-care professionals.
The trial, which is currently under way and is expected to conclude in 2025, aims to assess the chatbot’s efficacy in improving women’s participation in the HPV detection-based cervical cancer screening care pathway.
