IARC scientist to present at Breast Cancer Awareness Month event in Paris

Dr Sabina Rinaldi, Deputy Head of the Nutrition and Metabolism Branch at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and co-leader of the IARC Hormones and Metabolism Team, will present an overview of her work studying the links between hormones, metabolism, and the development of hormone-dependent cancers during an event for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The event, a colloquium titled “Octobre rose 2050: Agir sur les causes environnementales du cancer du sein”, is being organized by the Réseau Environnement Santé and the Alliance Santé Planétaire, with support from the Mairie de Paris. It will take place on Tuesday 22 October at 13:15–17:45 at the Académie du Climat in Paris, France.

Breast cancer and thyroid cancer are diseases that are heavily influenced by hormonal factors. During the event, Dr Rinaldi will present the most recent data on the incidence of breast cancer in France and internationally, as well as projected incidence rates up to 2050.

Dr Rinaldi will also discuss the exposome, a novel way of considering how cancer may develop based on the totality of risk factors to which a person is exposed throughout their life. These exposures include external factors, such as pollution and diet, as well as internal factors, such as metabolism and inflammation, which may influence an individual’s risk of developing cancer.
