Progress and remaining challenges for cancer control in the Gulf Cooperation Council

Experts from countries in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) together with researchers from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) have published a new review in The Lancet Oncology that highlights the status of cancer control programmes in GCC countries, describes what has been achieved to date, and identifies gaps, giving recommendations on how to lower the burden of cancer in the Gulf region in the future.

Policy-makers in GCC countries have invested in the development of National Cancer Control Strategies to address the current and future burden of cancer through different initiatives and policies for prevention, early detection, and management of cancer.

The Lancet Oncology also recorded a podcast with Professor Samar Alhomoud, lead author of the review, Chair of the IARC Ethics Committee, and consultant colorectal surgeon at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
